New York City Prepares for Rainy Memorial Day Weekend with Flood Mitigation Efforts
US · Published May 24, 2026
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) have issued a weather alert for prolonged rainfall expected over Memorial Day Weekend.
Rain is forecasted to begin Saturday morning, with the heaviest periods occurring Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
Additional showers are expected on Memorial Day.

Why It's Important?

The prolonged rainfall could lead to localized flooding, hazardous travel conditions, and disruptions in flood-prone neighborhoods. While widespread significant flooding is not anticipated, heavy rain may cause ponding on roads and temporary street closures. Strong winds could exacerbate conditions, particularly in elevated or exposed areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential impacts, especially during periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.
